SPLOT Open: openness in culture, science, design, art and social activities

The open-source movement and grassroots creators (makers) have revolutionised the way we think about the creation and distribution of knowledge, technology and products. But what does OPENNESS mean for the creative world today? On April 25th at 18:00, the Warsaw Observatory of Culture (WOK) will host the first event in the SPLOT Open series. The event is dedicated to the theme of OPENNESS and will explore initiatives that embody an open approach in various fields including science, culture, design, art, production, programming and social engagement.

SPLOT Open is a new initiative of the SPLOT Institute focusing on the exchange of interdisciplinary practices and knowledge. We facilitate a new space for meetings, interactions and exchange of ideas that have openness in their DNA.

We are launching the SPLOT Open activities in partnership with the Distributed Design Platform – a European network promoting the makers’ movement. The event will feature presentations of projects (selected through an open call) that exemplify an open approach with elements like community management, open-licence availability, open data, transparent development, process decentralisation, circularity and generativity.

MEDS CROSSROADS | Bartosz Andreczko
An international organisation created by the youth for the youth, which promotes the positive role of design in society and interdisciplinary, transnational collaboration in design.

HUMANISTYKA.DEV | Marcin Wilkowski
An educational project that supports the development of skills and knowledge in the area of using tools and methods of digital humanities.

DOM SZTUKI | Dorian Widawski
An integrating space in Warsaw’s Grochow district – a place with a cooperative garden, a library based on a neighbourhood exchange model, and regular socio-cultural events.

FIX IT FIELD | Alan Żmuda
A project that utilises data from the Sentinel 2A satellite, available under an open licence, to promote regenerative farming practices.

PLACES | Blanka Przedpełska
A universal educational tool that popularises accessibility and universal design, used during “Accessible City” workshops organised for design teams.

SCENA OTWARTA | Katarzyna Peplinska-Pietrzak
An educational model for artistic education accessible to blind and deaf individuals, opening cultural institutions to collaboration with artists with disabilities.

HOW OPEN IS DESIGN? | Olga Konik
A critical reflection in the form of an exhibition about the visions and concepts of open-access projects, their real-world usefulness, and the economical use of materials.

The evening programme also includes a panel discussion “Open, defined how?” with Bogna Gawrońska-Nowak, PhD, Edyta Ołdak, PhD, and Kasia Świętochowska. The event will also provide ample opportunity for informal discussions and networking.

SPLOT Open

SPLOT Open is a new programme of the SPLOT Institute that inspires cross-disciplinary creative collaboration to address pressing social, environmental and economic challenges. We deliver schemes for young creators from diverse backgrounds, using our own methodology that has been successfully applied in international projects: SPLOT UA Residency, Direction Earth/Space Creative Campus and ART+DESIGN+SCIENCE.
