Secondary Archive at the Warsaw Observatory of Culture

On 23 February 2022, Secondary Archive launched a new edition of its platform for female artists from Central and Eastern Europe with creatives from Ukraine and Belarus. The launch happened just a few hours before the invasion of Ukraine by Russia. Curators, artists and guests at the event spoke about a rising tension and the need to represent and protect the female artist’s heritage from Central and Eastern Europe, especially in the face of its destruction by Russia. It has been a year since that day, and Ukrainian artists continue to create despite all odds. The Secondary Archive is honoured to collaborate with female artists, who persistently fight for their rights, who are loud and proud, and through doing so, shape our reality. As the WOK team, on the other hand, we are grateful that we were able to contribute to the artists’ voices being heard in Warsaw.

The past year has shown us that art can be a powerful storyteller for those whose voices are being silenced. Therefore we wish to give public space to Ukrainian artists without external interference and let their voices be understood and heard.Iryna Polikarchuk, the project manager from Ukraine, says: In Pristina and Warsaw, we hear 14 voices out of 50 female artists from Ukraine presented in the Archive. In the spring of 2022, art seemed powerless against Russian tanks and missiles, so not all artists could speak. But these 14 voices tried to declare, manifest, and shout to the whole world about the war.

A year has passed, and the war continues. Our artists felt the strength and will to speak on behalf of Ukraine through their art. They create new artwork and participate in international exhibitions, conferences, and discussions. They defend Ukraine’s right to win this war and eliminate the colonial pressure from Russia at all levels.

A year has passed, and the audio statements of our artists remain relevant. They will continue to resonate in the public space to remind us that the war is still ongoing and we need the support of the European community.

23 лютого 2022 року Secondary Archive запустив новий розділ платформи для художниць із Центральної та Східної Європи з мисткинями з України та Білорусі. Презентація відбулась буквально за кілька годин до вторгнення Росії в Україну. Кураторки, художниці та гості заходу говорили про зростання напруги та необхідність репрезентації та захисту спадщини художниць із Центрально-Східної Європи, особливо в умовах її знищення Росією. З того дня минув рік, а українські мисткині, незважаючи ні на що, продовжують творити. Для Secondary Archive честь співпрацювати з художницями, які постійно борються за свої права, які лунають гучно та гордо, і тим самим формують нашу реальність. Минулий рік показав, що мистецтво може бути потужним оповідачем для тих, чиї голоси замовчують. Тому ми хочемо надати публічний простір українським артисткам без зовнішнього втручання, щоб їхні голоси були зрозумілі та почуті.

Ірина Полікарчук, менеджерка проєкту в Україні: “У Приштині та Варшаві ми чуємо 14 голосів із 50 артисток з України, представлених в Архіві. Навесні 2022 року мистецтво здавалося безсилим проти російських танків і ракет, тому не всі могли творити. Але ці 14 голосів намагалися говорити, оприявнити, кричати на весь світ про війну. Минув цілий рік, а війна триває. Наші художниці через свої мистецькі практики відчули силу та волю говорити від імені України. Вони створюють нові роботи, беруть участь у міжнародних виставках, конференціях, дискусіях. Вони відстоюють право України на перемогу в цій війні та звільнення від колоніального тиску Росії на всіх рівнях.
