How to conduct research through images? Movement and visuality of the city. Register for the seminar at the Warsaw Observatory of Culture!
The three-day methodological seminar: How to conduct research through images? Movement and visuality of the city is an opportunity to test your field skills. The execution of one’s own mini-project will be preceded by a workshop, providing an opportunity to practise the technique of walking-with-video. The technique will be discussed in the theoretical perspective of the paradigm of new mobilities and the tradition of situated research.
The workshop exercises and research walk will be carried out in teams of two. While one person will be the camera operator, the other will be the researcher (you can decide on these roles beforehand or try both during the seminar). We also welcome submissions from pre-formed pairs. Participants will be introduced to the successive stages of executing walking-with-video research, starting with the preparation of the script, the selection of the sample, the execution of the walk itself, and the transcription of the recordings (both audio and video).
- The seminar will take place between the morning of Friday, 20 September and 13:00 on Sunday, 22 September at the WOK lab space at ul Marszałkowska 34/50 in Warsaw.
- Submitting the form implies participation in all planned activities.
- Lunch and snacks will be provided for each day of the seminar, however travel and accommodation costs will not be covered.
- It is necessary that at least one person in the tandem is equipped with video recording equipment (a smartphone with a working battery and a few GBs of memory will suffice). Bring your own power bank if possible.
- Participation is free of charge and you do not need to be a student.
- The seminar will be held in Polish.
- The seminar is open to people who are at least 18 years old.
- The selection of applicants will be based on the answers provided in the application form and, above all, on the ideas for the execution of a mini research project using the proposed techniques and tools. The final decision on the list of teams/participants will be at the discretion of the committee.
The workshop will be conducted by Łukasz Rogowski PhD – sociologist, assistant professor from the Department of Sociology at theAdam Mickiewicz University in Poznań. Participant of national and international research projects using visual research and narrative techniques.
