‘Nothing’ + presentation by Zbigniew Warpechowski
Zbigniew Warpechowski (b. 1938) is a pioneer of performance art in Poland and one of the first artists in the world to work in this field. Werpechowski works primarily with poetry and painting and publishes theoretical writings on contemporary art. He began his artistic career in the 1960s and has created over three hundred performances on social issues.
On 27 March, the WOK Lab space hosted an event organised by Monopol Gallery. The artist returned to the notion of ‘Nothing’, which has been a major theme in his work since 1972. The performer first gave a speech about ‘Nothing’ and then presented a ream of blank paper, turning, crumpling and tearing the pages one by one. A blank page became a means of expressing ‘Nothing’.
If you think that nothing is better than something, think about the “nothing” that is the best (Zbigniew Warpechowski, 1973). For more information about the concept of ‘Nothing’, see the materials provided by the Monopol Gallery. You are welcome to view the presentation.
