Municipal Fellowships 2023/2024

The Warsaw Observatory of Culture (WOK) is a contributing partner of the fifth edition of the Municipal Fellowship programme. The aim of the programme is to deepen our understanding of the processes and challenges facing a changing Warsaw and its residents, and to use this knowledge to shape urban policy. The programme extends its support to doctoral students hailing from various regions across Poland.

We are overseeing three of the four thematic areas of this year’s competition, which is run under the auspices of the Culture Development Division of the Culture Department. Małgorzata Bakalarz-Duverger, Marta Michalak and Olga Wysocka, representing WOK, are in charge of the process. The programme was open to those interested in conducting research in the following four thematic areas were invited:

  1. participation of “new residents of Warsaw” (people with migration or refugee experience) in culture–needs, mapping, accessibility
  2. social institutions of culture
  3. cultural institutions in transition
  4. inclusive language in contemporary Poland.

The Municipal Fellowships will be awarded for a maximum of 12 months, with a total funding of up to PLN 30,000 per project. The selection of fellows will be based on the compatibility of the topic of the research project with the specified research areas, the consideration of local context and practical application of the research.

The application round ended on 10 July 2023. The evaluation process of the proposals is underway, broken down into three stages: formal, merit-based, involving WOK, and the session of the scholarship committee, which evaluates the scientific relevance of the research projects. The final list of fellowship recipients will be announced in late September/early October.
