WOK at a conference on children’s and young adult literature
Miranda Zarzycka presented preliminary research findings on children’s literacy education, conducted by us at WOK, at a conference organized by the Wytwórnia publishing and the polish National Library.
We understand the concept of literacy education broadly, encompassing four main definitional approaches: critical reading, reading against misinformation, reading for the sake of reading (e.g. as a form of recreation), and fostering communities around reading. All these aspects were the subject of our discussions with the people invited to participate in the study, who shared their opinions on children’s and young adult literacy. Shifting the perspective on literacy may involve asking “how?” rather than just “what?” young people are reading. What are the implications of this for various stakeholders in the field of literacy education? What does “literacy” or “reading” mean in the age of the digital revolution? And what could it signify for different generations of readers, and what are the consequences?
Our research reflections served as a starting point for discussions with other invited guests: Anna Nowacka-Devillard from the Widnokrąg publishing, educator Małgorzata Swędrowska, and Monika Wróbel-Lutz from the Tatarak publishing. The panel was moderated by Beata Jewiarz. The conference took place on March 22nd at the National Library in Warsaw.
