Artist Mothers: Home residency and tutoring programme

The pilot home-based residency project, supported by tutoring sessions and tandems of fellow artists, was designed for female visual artists who are parents and act as carers. It was developed by visual artists who have the same experience. It was based on the assumption that being a parent significantly impacts on creative practice and results in certain limitations in the life of the parent or carer. The aim was to build a community and carve out time for creative work. Therefore, we created a structure for the work, created an additional, external commitment to undertake it, and provided support, both financial (childcare funding) and content-related (tutoring and group consultation). The project included group meetings with the tutors, which included talks, one-to-one consultations and creative work time within the home-based residency, where each participant stayed in contact with a tandem of fellow artists.
