Artistic, Collective, Metropolitan. Warsaw art studios as micro-institutions. Publication

The central theme of the collected texts is the availability of spaces rented by municipal Property Management Companies (ZGN), which, as we point out, often do not represent a significant alternative to private renting. In addition, the vagueness of the existing procedures and frequent misunderstandings make it even more challenging to benefit from them. Inspired by Marta Żakowska’s work presented during the 6th edition of the “Warsaw Under Construction. City of Artists” festival, we identify the challenges and formulate (often provisional and ad hoc) solutions. We would like to encourage individuals working in the field of visual arts, as well as the staff of cultural institutions and relevant city authorities, to read our publication.

The research material that enabled us to develop the collection of texts consists of interviews with officials and art professionals, an analysis of laws and regulations governing the rental of city-owned art studios, a review of artworks and exhibitions, and case studies of the availability of art studios in other parts of Europe. Some of the material is the product of a research laboratory led by Dr Karolina Thel, which comprises students from the Department of Artistic Research and Curatorial Studies.
