Milena Soporowska

I am particularly interested in the performative and aesthetic aspects of ritual-saturated spectacles, such as spiritualist séances, fortune-telling and witch trials. I analyse the role of fairy tales and legends as a means of processing difficult and brutal historical events. Drawing on critical heritage studies and Ariella Azoulay’s concept of potential history, I explore alternative approaches to constructing narratives about women, grounded in art-based research methods.
I conduct my research at the Windowlicker gallery, which I founded at the New R Guzmán Market in Warsaw and which operates as an esoteric stall, as well as at the Hydroza artists’ collective. Since 2020, I have been associated with Radio Kapitał, where I produced the Tarotiada programme. I currently host the solo programmes Czeczota and Windowlicker, which deal with esoteric topics.
My work incorporates photography, found objects, archival materials, performative techniques, text and sound.
I have a degree in Art History from the College of Interdisciplinary Individual Studies in the Humanities (MISH) and a degree in Museology from the Faculty of History at the University of Warsaw. I also studied photography as part of the Sputnik Photos mentoring programme and at the Jastrzębska School of Documentary Photography.
