Study visit to the Vistula pavilion
The pavilion building
The visit, which took place on 6 November 2023, is part of the process of modelling a dance institution in Warsaw. We visited the building to discuss its future adaptation to its new function, i.e. to host the dance pilot programme scheduled for 2024–2025. We toured the pavilion with Szymon Żydek, Deputy Director of Operations at the Museum of Modern Art, and members of the museum’s technical team.
The pavilion is located on the Wybrzeże Kościuszkowskie and Vistula River boulevards, which come alive in spring and summer. This is the second location of this building, designed by Austrian architect Adolf Krischanitz, having moved to Warsaw from Berlin. An important aspect here is copyright: any change to the architecture of the building requires the consent of its creator.
We looked at the modernisation of the building from many angles, both technical and administrative. Today, the pavilion fulfils minimal functions in terms of exhibition and outreach. The space needs to be transformed to accommodate the necessary infrastructure needed for event production.
What do we need?
After a tour of the building, we discussed the needs and postulates for the modernisation of the pavilion. It would be helpful to consult with teams working in facilities similar to the Warsaw space, such as the UFO Studio in Berlin and the Rozbark Dance and Movement Theatre in Bytom. The project would also benefit from discussions with technical coordinators from similar spaces in Warsaw. The next stage of work on the dance centre should conclude with the elaboration of a concise vision and needs for the modernisation of the pavilion and the development of a functional plan to transform it into a unique cultural institutions in Warsaw.
We record minutes and notes for all meetings and workshops related to the new municipal dance centre project. These records are accessible to all interested parties. If you want to learn more about the process of modelling dance institutions in Warsaw, please contact us at taniec@wok.art.pl.
